Our Missions & Goals
What motivates us?
NBX’s mission is to advance research at the convergence of nanotechnology, data science, and biomedical science, support startup creation, and promote training for upcoming scientists and engineers.
The world is in the midst of an exciting evolution, where grand challenges in precision medicine and mapping brain circuits are calling for unprecedented convergent technologies. These technologies must bridge and integrate biomedical knowledge with advanced engineering skills and expertise from physical and computational sciences to drive groundbreaking progress.
Precision medicine is poised to revolutionize healthcare, enabling early detection of disease or risks of diseases and tailoring treatments for individual patients. It has the potential to reduce medical costs, sense viruses and bacteria in the environment, and provide a path towards curing cancer. Furthermore, novel neurotechnologies are being developed to unravel the mysteries of the neural basis of brain function and produce implantable electronics. This will lead to better solutions to treating brain diseases, curing chronic pains, and advancing human augmentation technologies, ushering in a new era of scientific discovery and medical breakthroughs.
Areas of Focus
What projects are we working on
Nanoscale Diagnostics for Precision Medicine, PoC Microchips, and Biodefense
Explore nanoscale diagnostic technologies for precise monitoring of disease progression. Our innovative approach uses biofunctionalized nanoparticles and DNA/RNA molecules as sensitive biosensing platforms integrated into wearables and microchips. This enables identification of genetic mutations, protein expression, and diseases, contributing to precision medicine. The ultra-miniaturized portable microchips allow multiplexed diagnostics at home or on-the-go while addressing biological threats like bioterrorism and infectious diseases.
Wearable and implantable neural interfaces for behavior and medicine
Revolutionizing healthcare, our initiative focuses on harnessing neurotechnologies to significantly improve the lives of individuals grappling with psychiatric, neurological, and chronic pain conditions, presenting a comprehensive approach—from innovative wearables to advanced diagnostics—for tackling the challenges of an aging society.
Nanotechnologies for gene and cell reprogramming
Unlock the potential of nanoscale materials in our quest to restore and enhance cellular function, combatting disease and aging. From customized microenvironments that reprogram cells to targeted delivery of biomolecules, our innovative strategies are addressing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and chronic pain, ushering in a new era of precision healthcare.
An example of a macro-scale telerobotic system that allows the user to operate remotely for telemanipulation bypassing the barrier of distance. The same principles can be used for telerobotic surgery, cell manipulation, and micromanipulation when the barrier is the concept of “scale”. The use of such systems would allow the operator to achieve superresolution beyond human natural competence.
